In the book we are instantly introduced to our then unnamed narrator. For those interesting in doing just that: consider this your official spoiler warning. Overall, the film was pretty good for something made in the 70’s though I highly recommend reading the book instead even though the movie is still worth a watch. Tryon’s attention to detail is exquisite as well as chilling, making it the perfect scary story to be told aloud at a campfire or read late at night, under your blankets with a flashlight. The boys spend their days swimming, playing hide and seek, avoiding their annoying cousin Russell and playing a special game their grandmother taught them. But then one of the boys takes this game too far it results in a body count. American movie star Thomas Tryon released his debut novel, The Other, in 1971, it follows the toxic relationship between these brothers and rapidly received notoriety so it wasn’t a surprise when it was adapted into a film in 1972.īetween the book and the movie, like in most cases, I definitely preferred the book. The summer of 1935 is no exception to this fact. The well behaved Niles is nothing like his mischievous brother but they’ve always been together and have always gotten along. They are identical twins who are alike in every way, with only their severely contrasting personalities making it possible to tell them apart. Thirteen year old Niles and Holland Perry are like any boys their age.
